Both Wi-Fi and active RFID systems allow hospitals to know where their equipment is, nearly in real time. Focus on healthcare, because most hospitals have Wi-Fi networks in place and many medical devices are Wi-Fi-equipped for patient monitoring.

Almost anything can be tagged, assets, patients and consumables. In hospitals, tagging of equipment like ECG machines and wheelchairs and IV pumps could result in large savings by making them easier to locate, so reducing the overall numbers needed.

Digital tagging (RFID) is offering a solution for improving patient safety and managing high cost hospital equipment location according to an article in 'Health Informatics Now.

RFID is also opening up many innovative opportunities which are being exploited by healthcare providers across the globe. For example, Nice University is testing the use of electronic tags to improve the delivery of meals to the elderly and infirm through its 'Meals at Home' service. Delivery people scan tags on the meal trays and the patient’s cards to make sure the correct meal is delivered to the correct patient. If a patient appears unwell, information can also be sent by SMS directly to the patient’s doctor and relations.

Vision Loss

There is an element of truth to the notion that age-related processes can affect our eyesight. The good news is that identifying and treating these processes can often result in the preservation or restoration of excellent vision for an entire lifetime.

The National Institutes of Health has announced a nationwide study to see if a modified combination of vitamins, minerals, and fish oil can further slow the progression of vision loss from AMD (Age-related Macular Degeneration), the leading cause of vision loss in the United States for people over age 60. High-dose antioxidant vitamins and minerals (vitamins C and E, beta-carotene, zinc, and copper), taken by mouth, reduced the risk of progression to advanced AMD by 25 percent.

More than 80 per cent of vision loss is caused by the following *conditions: *AMD is a degeneration of the central part of the retina. About a quarter of people who live into their 90s will eventually lose vision from this condition. *Cataract, a clouding of the clear lens of the eye. *Diabetic eye disease, when tiny bloody vessels inside the retina at the back of the eye are damaged. *Refractive error, which mean that an image is not focused properly on to the retina, the light-sensitive tissue in the back of the eye. *Glaucoma, a group of eye diseases that slowly destroy the optic nerve.
